WILLIAM BOUGUEREAU | ORA PRO NOBIS

[ translate ]

Property from a European Private Collection
WILLIAM BOUGUEREAU
French
1825 - 1905
ORA PRO NOBIS

signed W-BOUGUEREAU and dated 1903 (lower right)
oil on canvas
45¼ by 29¼ in.
115 by 74.5 cm

Condition Report:
The following condition report has been prepared by Hamish Dewar Ltd., 13 and 14 Mason's Yard, St James', London, SW1Y 6BU:

The canvas is unlined and is securely attached to what certainly appears to be the artist's original keyed wooden stretcher with one central vertical and one horizontal cross member. The tacking and turnover edges have been reinforced with a thin strip-lining. This is ensuring an even and stable structural support. The stamp of the canvas manufacturer is visible on the reverse.

The paint surface has an even varnish layer. There are faint stretcher bar lines corresponding to the each of the stretcher members. These are entirely stable. The paint surface displays an overall pattern of slightly raised craquelure which is also stable. There are scattered networks of drying craquelure including within Mary's neck. These are entirely stable and are attributable to the natural drying processes of the artist's materials. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows faint vestiges of discoloured varnish including around the signature in the lower right corner of the composition. Inspection under ultraviolet light also shows small spots and lines of retouchings within Mary's neck and the right side of her veil including corresponding to the drying cracks mentioned above; small, carefully applied hatched retouchings within the cherub's legs towards the centre of the right edge, and a small spot of retouching within a cherub's wing in the upper left corner of the composition.

The painting would therefore appear to be in very good and stable condition.
