WILLIAM GEAR, R.A. | SEPTEMBER LANDSCAPE

[ translate ]

Property from the Antoinette and Patrick Murphy Collection

WILLIAM GEAR, R.A.
1915-1997
SEPTEMBER LANDSCAPE

signed and dated '51; also signed, titled, dated Sept. '51 and inscribed on the reverse
oil on canvas
45 by 65.5cm.; 17¾ by 25¾in.

Condition Report:
The canvas appears to be original. The canvas undulates slightly in places but appears sound. There are instances of cracking to the extreme edges where the canvas is stretched around the stretcher bars with some spots of associated loss in places. There is a fine line of cracking towards the lower edge, most likely due to the stretcher bar. There is a very fine stretcher bar mark at the upper edge, largely only visible in raking light. There is a pattern of very fine lines of craquelure to the yellow pigment in the lower right quadrant, only visible upon close inspection, with possible further more minor instances elsewhere. There is light surface dirt in places and a few instances of small flecks of detritus and surface matter. This excepting, the work appears in good overall condition.

Inspection under ultraviolet light is rendered difficult by the nature of the Artist's materials and working methods but there are no obvious signs of fluorescence or retouching.

The work is held in painted wooden composite frame.
