Catalogue note:
Born in Charleston, William Henry Brown achieved success as a silhouette artist in the early-to-mid 19th century. His mastery of freehand paper cutting meant he could travel light and set up shop anywhere without bulky tracing equipment weighing him down. Brown was able to make silhouettes of many prominent Americans, twenty-six of which were published in the compilation "Portrait Gallery of Distinguished American Citizens," by E.B. & E.C. Kellogg Lithography Company in 1845. Brown's silhouettes were attached to lithographed backgrounds, which were printed together and reproduced. This technique combining silhouettes and lithography earned Brown comparisons to the renowned French silhouette artist Auguste Edouart.
