Portrait of the Three Mast Schooner "Charlotte T. Sibley" leaving Boston harbor, oil on canvas, unsigned. In the original gold gesso frame, OS: 28" x 42", SS: 21 1/2" x 35 1/2". Relined, cleaned, overall craquelure.
Built for Edward T. Sibley in 1882 by Carter & Co. of Belfast, Maine. 359 tons, 140 ft length, 32 ft beam, 11 ft draught. Depicted passing the Boston Light, the "Sibley" ran the coast from Nova Scotia to Florida, was wrecked in 1907 off Bass River, Cape Cod, her crew famously saved by the Crosby-built motor boat "Idlico" in heroic circumstances, of note as the first rescue at sea by a gasoline powered craft.
