WINSLOW HOMER (MA/ME, 1836-1910)

"Portrait of John Murray Brown", graphite on grey-blue paper, signed lower right, stamped on back and on mount as being from the collection of artist Joseph Imhoff, titled on scrap of paper adhered to back of mount. Unframed, rough landscape sketch on back. 12 1/4" x 9 1/4" sheet, deckled on two edges. Small spot on left, otherwise very good, remnants of paper tape hinged top back.
John Murray Brown (1842-1908) was the Senior Partner of the Boston publishers Little, Brown and Co. Brown and his family would summer on Monhegan Island, Maine, when Homer was there. Joseph Imhoff (1871-1955) was a self-taught lithographer for Currier & Ives in NY. He collected American portraits.
