WITHDRAWN Trevor Bell, British 1930-2017 - Windover Nine, 2014-15; mixed media on shaped canvas, signed, titled and dated verso 'Windover Nine Trevor Bell 2014-15', 150 x 250 cm (unframed) (ARR) Provenance: the Estate of the Artist Note: This piece is one of a series of works painted in 2013-14, entitled Windover, by the British artist Trevor Bell. These abstract paintings are powerful explorations of colour and form which possess a striking sense of movement and vitality, executed on the large scale, irregularly-shaped canvases which are typical of those used by the artist. Bell studied at Leeds College of Art from 1947-1952, moving to Cornwall in 1955 on the advice of his contemporary Terry Frost. It was here that Bell became associated with artists such as Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth, Patrick Heron, Naum Gabo, and Peter Lanyon, who together formed the seminal St Ives School which was so central to the development of twentieth-century British art. Bell’s role in this group was confirmed by the inclusion of his work in a 1985 Tate London exhibition of the Art of St Ives, 1939-64, and also in the inaugural exhibition of the Tate St Ives in 1993. He also was the subject of a solo exhibition at the Tate St Ives in 2004, cementing his significant presence in the town’s artistic community. Bell’s work is held in the collections of the Tate Gallery, the British Museum, and the Victoria & Albert Museum, among many others. His first solo exhibition was held by Waddington Galleries in 1958, and this was followed by Bell’s receipt of the International Painting Prize at the Paris Biennale in the following year. His work has also been exhibited at the Whitechapel Gallery in London, the Corcoran Gallery and the Academy of Sciences in Washington D.C., and the Metropolitan Museum in Miami.
