\Artist: W. J. Martens (1839-1895)
Technique: Watercolour\Signature: Hand signed\Dimensions: 64_58_5_cm
The painter Willem Johann Martens (1839-1895) received his first painting lessons from the history painter Nicolaas Pieneman. In addition to landscapes and church interiors, his work also includes genre pieces and portraits. Martens made a study trip to Berlin and lived in Rome for a long time where he was a member of the artists' association Gli Acquerellisti. He became proficient in the so-called 'Italienne' genre, which arose from the great demand at that time for figure pieces by Italian beauties, often in traditional costume. The artwork on offer shows a beautiful depiction by this artist, painted with great skill. The work is framed in a handmade, gold-coloured frame with ornaments and mat. The work is signed on the bottom left and annotated: Roma. The artwork is in good condition. The size of the panel itself is: 35 x 30 cm. Provenance: from a private collection. Viewing of the lot is of course possible. All contact information can be found on our own website.
