Description

Faceted base, with large cut rock crystal, straight light arms with cylindrical candle holders and smooth cuffs. Height 24 cm.

OTHER:
Wolfgang Gessl is considered one of our most interesting and skilled gemsmiths, he was born in 1949 in Vienna, where he also grew up and trained, with Professor Hans Angerbauer at HTBL. The reason he ended up in Stockholm was that during his education he saw pictures of the corpussilver of the nobleman Sigurd Persson and then decided that he wanted to do his apprenticeship with him.

Apprenticeships with Sigurd were highly sought after so it took three years before he was allowed to start work in his workshop. This meant that during his wait he had to seek other employment, which proved to be a valuable exercise in silverwork, including through repair work with the Guldsmedsaktiebolaget.

Sigurd's apprenticeship was between 1971-1976 and in parallel he was also a student at Konstfack, where he taught for a period of 25 years. At the end of the 1970s he took over the workshop after Sigurd Persson and started his own business there in 1980.

Wolfgang Gessl is described as very active and engaged in and around his work. In addition to his own activities, as mentioned earlier, he was also a teacher and lecturer at Konstfack, in addition he was for many years very active in Nutida Svenskt Silver where he also sat on the board for some time.

He was happy to engage in major exhibitions both in Sweden and abroad and was a popular guest lecturer at several universities here and in Europe. Wolfgang's own exhibitions are described as meticulously arranged. He worked for several years on his works and received very high appreciation. Shape-proof jugs, bowls, saucers, candlesticks and candelabra with unexpected material mixes and selected large stones such as rock crystal, obsidian or amethyst as extra accents.

Wolfgang Gessl is represented in many of the world's major museums and is in several private collections.Show more
