WORKSHOP OF SEVERO CALZETTA DA RAVENNA (ACTIVE 1496-1543)
ITALIAN, PADUA, 16TH CENTURY
Kneeling Satyr mounted as an Inkwell

bronze
satyr: 20cm., 7⅞in.
24cm., 9½in. overall

Condition Report:
Overall the condition of the bronze is good, with some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. There is dust throughout, in particular in the crevices. There is a loss to the satyr's proper right little finger. The surface of the bronze is a little dry, and there is wear to the lacquer patina, including flaking. The proper right hand appears to have been cast separately, with a slightly visible joint at the wrist. There is a hole to the proper right hand which would have supported a now-lost attribute. There is also a hole to the top of the head, probably to facilitate extraction of the core after casting. There are several nicks and minor scratches to the bronze. The base and shell inkwell appear to be original, but it is possible that they could be associated. There is a hole to the base below the satyr's proper left hoof.
