WORLD WAR I: THE BATTLE OF JUTLAND.
A ships bell cast using brass from the HMS Tiger. British: c. 1917.
A ships bell cast using brass from the HMS Tiger. British: c. 1917. Brass ship's bell, engraved "Metal from HMS Tiger Jutland 1916," rope attached to the hammer, and a short metal chain from the top. Diameter 7.5 inches (190 mm), height 7 inches (180 mm.)
A curious naval relic recast from brass salvaged from the Tiger after the Battle of Jutland. HMS Tiger was a heavily armed battlecruiser built in 1913, and spent much of World War I on patrol in the North Sea. During the Battle of Jutland, the Tiger was hit a number of times by German shells, but was not incapacitated. It is likely that the damage was rectified during a refit after the battle, and some of the brass salvaged was recast into ship's bells, such as this, to raise funds for injured sailors.
