DOWNEY REV. CAPT WILLIAM B. Chaplains Prayers for the Hiroshima and Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Missions [circa 1960s] Two prayers, each written in black ink on quality writing paper, 8vo, both starting "Prayer by William B Downey Captain, Chaplain 509th Composite Group (VH) 6th (9th) August 1945 at the Hiroshima (Nagasaki) briefing," each prayer with various differences, and both signed by William Downey.
The chaplain was very much part of an Army Unit and officiated at times of burial, and offered prayers before a battle or mission. In his Hiroshima Prayer Downey says "may they as well as us, know thy strength and power, and armed with thy might may bring this war to a rapid end". Perhaps the devastating power of the atomic bomb, was a better known secret amongst the 509th Composite Group.
