KENNEY, GENERAL GEORGE CHURCHILL. 1899-1977. Chapter titled "I have returned," from his book on MacArthur "The MacArthur I know". [1950.] Typed carbon copy of a chapter from Kenney's book on MacArthur, a pre-publication typescript from "The MacArthur I Know," published in 1951, after MacArthur's death, 11 leaves, 4to, with the final leaf signed by the author, the chapter discussing how MacArthur set out and engineered the plan to retake the Philippines in 1944.

General Kenney was a career airman, serving with the 91st Aero Squadron in World War I. By July 1942 he had risen to commander of the Allied Air Forces and Fifth Air Force in the Southwest Pacific under MacArthur. He started to devise strategies of air harassment and attack learned in Europe in the 1940s. In fact Kenney's air tactics became the principal reason for MacArthur's rise back to power after his the debacle of the loss of the Philippines in 1942. The strategy that MacArthur and Kenney adopted was based on breaking the Japanese supply lines and particularly in denying the Japanese troops badly needed medicines against malaria, hence eroding the power of the ground forces. In this they were very successful, and although it was often said that the two has a tempestuous relationship, without Kenney's guile, Macarthur's plans for the retaking of the Philippines and other Pacific Islands would never have been achieved. In this chapter one can see the rational air commander evaluating the character and performance of his superior officer, and Kenney is often amazed at what MacArthur achieved.
