A collection of 3 pieces of "trench art" produced to raise funds for the RAF Benevolent Fund. [England: 1941-45.]
Comprising;
1) An aluminum ashtray engraved, "Made from a Rolls Royce Merlin Engine piston, as used in the Battle of Britain August -October 1940," with the arms of the RAF and the famous quote by Churchill, "Never in the Field of human Conflict..." Diameter 5 inches (130 mm).
2) Aluminum "scramble bell," lettered "cast with metal from German aircraft shot down over Britain. 1939-45 RAF Benevolent Fund," with the profiles of Churchill, Stalin and Roosevelt around body of the bell. Diameter 4.5 inches (115 mm).
3) An aluminum model of a Spitfire, mounted, made from salvaged metals from German planes; together with a copy of the Commemorative issue of the Illustrated London News, January 18th 1947, including the official RAF Roll of Honor for the Battle of Britain.
Provenance: The private collection of the Former Assistant Secretary of the Battle of Britain Association; The War Museum, these pieces exhibited 1995-2007, at the Intrepid Sea Air and Space Museum, New York.
