WRITING ON HER LAST BIRTHDAY, TWO MONTHS BEFORE HER DEATH DIANA; PRINCESS OF WALES. Autograph Letter Signed, "Diana," to Elizabeth Tilberis, thanking for the birthday gift of flowers, expressing amazement at the amount of money made at last week's auction [at Christie's where the sale of her dresses realized over $2 million for charity], and praising American generosity. 2 pages, small 4to, monogrammed stationery, written on the recto and verso of a single sheet; horizontal fold. With the original envelope, addressed in holograph. [London], 1 July 1997

Estimate $2,000 - 3,000

"Thank you so much for thinking of me on my birthday . . . .
"It was stunning the amount made by the auction last week. How typical of the Americans to be so totally generous. I can always rely on them!"
The idea of bringing to auction a selection of Princess Diana's evening wear was suggested by her son, Prince William. Lady Diana resolved to convert her dresses into funds to aid the Royal Marsden Hospital Cancer Fund and the AIDS Crisis Trust. To many, the sale of the dresses represented the Princess's passage into a new phase of life; tragically, she died two months later.

Price Realized (with Buyer's Premium) $3,640
