WW1 Imperial German M17 Gas Mask and Tin. A great example of the Great War Imperial German M17 Gas Mask and its carry tin. The mask constructed in leather with metal lenses frames and filter. Both lenses have discolored over the yeas but remain in situ as does the metal framing within each lens. The head straps with elasticated sides are all present and in great order, as it with cotton twill neck strap. The filter and the mount, are both in the original olive green finish with little wear and slight surface rusting. The underside of the filter mount is named 'Ludwig' in pencil. The filter retains its card plate on the underside with pull ring. The twisted card string cord is also present which is to support the weight of the filter when in use. Seldom seen in situ. The mask is housed in the correct carry tin, with olive green factory finish. The lid closure works correctly and overall a very solid example. The webbing straps with adjustment buckle and white leather stoppers are in exceptional condition. The interior of the lid retains the small compartment still housing spare lenses in the packets. The inside of the tin in a satin black is in good order and at the bottom of the case is the original paper instruction sheet. This piece is a great all round example and would be difficult to improve on. Minimal age related wear considering its age.
