LOT 0097A

WWI European Wood / Iron Club for Trench Raids

[ translate ]

Western Europe, ca. 1914 to 1918 CE. A very lethal looking weapon with a wooden handle and a metal strip with three nails driven through the middle. The handle has a rounded head with a strip of metal riveted just below the blunt tip. Three long nails are driven through this area with the lengthy shanks protruding with the pointed tip and the head from both sides. This was not a military issue weapon, but improvised by the soldiers for close quarter combat. Often metalsmiths or carpenters would produce large batches of clubs for their regiments. Clubs were generally used at nighttime for raids of enemy trenches and were ideal for surprise attacks, because they were both silent and deadly. While WWI made use of many new technological weapons and tactics, the nighttime trench battles made use of fairly simple weapons for stealth. Size: 14.5" L x 1.5" W (36.8 cm x 3.8 cm)

Provenance: ex-Dundee collection, Newtownabbey, United Kingdom

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
