WWII Heer Grossdeutschland Artillerie-Regiment GD Cypher Shoulder Boards. Pair of WWII German Army (Heer) Panzergrenadier Division Grossdeutschland Artillerie-Regiment enlisted/NCO shoulder boards, each bearing a stamped metal 'GD' cypher and bright-red (Hochrot) artillery Waffenfarbe piping.
Offered here is a matched pair of slip-on shoulder straps (Schulterklappen) as worn by enlisted men and NCOs of the Artillerie-Regiment Grossdeutschland, the elite division's organic artillery arm. Each strap carries the applied stamped metal 'GD' monogram, the insignia authorized exclusively for personnel of the Grossdeutschland division and worn in conjunction with the division's well-known cuff title as a mark of its distinctive status within the Wehrmacht Heer. No named soldier, paybook, or other paperwork accompanies the pair, and as is typical for rank-and-file insignia of this kind, no separate individual biography can be attached; their significance rests entirely in the branch and unit markings themselves.
Grossdeutschland began the war as the Wachregiment Berlin, a ceremonial guard formation, before its rapid expansion first into a motorized infantry regiment and ultimately into a full panzergrenadier division recognized as one of the finest fighting formations fielded by Germany. Uniquely among Heer units, its personnel were permitted to wear the intertwined 'GD' shoulder cypher as a mark of distinction. The division's artillery regiment, identified here by the bright red Hochrot piping proper to the artillery branch, provided both towed and self-propelled fire support through the division's heaviest engagements, including the 1943 Battle of Kursk and the subsequent fighting around Belgorod, and later the grinding defensive battles in East Prussia in 1944-45 as Grossdeutschland was repeatedly committed as a fire brigade on the collapsing Eastern Front.
Each board is of field-grey wool body cloth edged in the bright red artillery Waffenfarbe piping, with a stamped 'GD' cypher affixed to the face. The cyphers retain their prong-mount construction and a dark, age-appropriate finish consistent with wartime manufacture. The underside attachment tongues, used to slip the boards onto the shoulder straps of the field tunic, appear complete and intact on both examples; no maker's mark is recorded.
No additional insignia, documents, or case accompany this lot beyond the pair of shoulder boards. Condition is very good for service-worn wartime issue: the field-grey wool shows light surface wear with minor tracking consistent with period use, and the red piping shows expected age toning. The metal cyphers show no losses or repairs and remain securely mounted to both straps.
A well-marked, correctly branch-coded pair of Grossdeutschland artillery shoulder boards that speaks directly to one of the Wehrmacht's most storied divisions and the guns that supported it from Kursk to East Prussia.
