WWII U.S. Marine Corps VMF-462 Fighter Squadron Patch
World War Two United States Marine Corps USMC VMF-462 squadron patch. Schiffli embroidery on wool. Measures 5.25" in diameter. Marine Fighting Squadron 462 (VMF-462) was activated MCAS El Centro, California on April 15, 1944. On October 10, 1944 the squadron absorbed personnel and equipment from VMF-481 and they were redesignated a fighter pilot replacement training unit. The unit flew Vought F4U-1 Corsair during this time. Shortly thereafter they transferred to MCAS El Toro, California and remained there until the end of the war. The squadron was quickly deactivated after the war's end on 10. September 1945. The "Hawky Talky" bird was well known to the American public as one of the characters in the "Barney Google and Snuffy Smith" comic strip. Its ferocity and animosity toward the Japanese symbolized the feelings of squadron personnel. The Corsair on which the "Hawky Talky" is riding denotes the type of aircraft flown by the squadron.
