WWII US NAVY CROSS MEDAL BLACK WIDOW STYLE WW2
WWII era US Navy Cross medal. The second highest Navy and Marine Corps award for valor, second only to the Medal of Honor. This is a wartime original example with full wrap brooch and distinctive darkened bronze color planchet sometimes referred to as the "Black Widow." The nickname derives its name from the unique coloration of the medal, but ironically many of the awards of these early contract medals were posthumous. Slight wear to the finish on both sides of the planchet, and one small spot of discoloration on the reverse side of the drape. Brooch, pin, and clasp are all intact and functional. Excellent.
