WWII USMC 1st Marine Division Australian Service Jacket Dated 1944
World War II Australian Army battle dress jacket. These jackets were the only ones available to many Marines of the First Marine Division while staging in Australia. The US Marine Corps found it was more cost effective to adopt the Australian coats and sew their patches and stripes to them than to wait for service uniforms to be shipped to the Pacific. This Australian-made garment is constructed from heavyweight wool. A white cloth manufacturer label is sewn into the interior waist area, reading in printed black characters: N180 . MADE IN AUSTRALIA 1944 SIZE 36R. The short-waisted, "Ike" style jacket features a button-down front with a fly cover, two pleated breast pockets with buttoned flaps, and adjustable button tabs at the waist and cuffs. The interior is partially lined with tan cotton duck fabric, which also forms the pocket bags. The left shoulder bears a 1st Marine Division Guadalcanal patch. Mounted above the left breast pocket is a single ribbon bar for the Philippine Defense Medal, displaying vertical stripes of blue, yellow, and red. The jacket retains its original brown plastic four-hole buttons throughout. Overall very good condition with minor staining. There are no moth holes. Pickup is Monday, Nov. 9, from 11 am to 7 pm at our facility in Lancaster, OH. Alternate pickup day is available by appointment for a $5 fee per lot, or we will provide in-house shipping for this item.
