Wallace Heard Goldsmith (American, 1873-1945) Let's All Be Jittery! and News of the Week as Seen by Goldsmith, Boston Post newspaper cartoons (two works), February 1940 India ink and lithographic crayon on heavyweight paper 10 x 8-1/2 inches (25.4 x 21.6 cm) (Let's All Be Jittery!, image) 14 x 14 inches (35.6 x 35.6 cm) (News of the Week as Seen by Goldsmith, image) Each signed in lower region: Wallace Goldsmith Wallace Goldsmith was a prominent Boston illustrator and newspaper sports and editorial cartoonist in the first half of the 20th century whose work was published in the Boston Herald, Boston Globe (1909-1919) and Boston Post (1920-1945). He created early Sunday comics color pages for the Boston papers, including comic strips Little Allright and Mr. Asa Spades. These two originals by Goldsmith were published in February 1940, and both portray President Franklin D. Roosevelt on his trip that included a visit to Panama and meeting with President Augusto S. Boyd. FDR stands atop the deck of the USS Tuscaloosa as the ship emerges from the Panama Canal in Let's All Be Jittery; he fishes with one hand and views far-off Imperial Japan through binoculars—a Japan depicted as an awesome, fear-inspiring Samurai warrior who ominously declares "He has come out upon the Pacific." News of the Week As Seen By Goldsmith appeared in the Sunday edition of the Boston Post of February 25, 1940. FDR is again portrayed aboard the USS Tuscaloosa, fishing for "those questions without answers" in "third term" waters while the menace of Japan lurks behind him. Other stories include the intrusion into Norwegian waters by the British destroyer HMS Cossack to free captive British merchantmen aboard the German supply ship Altmark; Romania's efforts to secure its neutrality as its neighbors grasp at its resources; the King of Sweden caught between Soviet Russia and Nazi Germany; the aftermath of Huey Long's disastrous leadership in Louisiana; and maverick Senator David I. Walsh lending support the the expansion of the U.S. Navy. (image size: 14" x 14") Both originals are inscribed and signed by the artist above his signature: "With best wishes to Murray Harris Wallace Goldsmith" and "To Murray Harris Wallace Goldsmith."
