Walt Disney, Pluto and the Puppy, First Edition 1937, illustrated

"Pluto and the Puppy" story and illustrations by the Staff of the Walt Disney Studios, published by Grosset and Dunlap, New York, 1937. First edition. Published in conjunction with the introduction of Pluto's cartoon series in 1937.

Hard boards, illustrated front board, 9.1/2" x 10.1/2"; illustrated endpapers, unpaginated [c.35 pages]; all pages are illustrated, some soiling and wear, very good condition.

Pluto debuted in animated cartoons and appeared in 24 Mickey Mouse films before receiving his own series in 1937. All together Pluto appeared in 89 short films between 1930 and 1953. Several of these were nominated for an Academy Award.

Because Pluto does not speak, his films generally rely on physical humor. This made Pluto a pioneering figure in character animation, by expressing personality through animation rather than dialogue.
