The Whalers Mickey Mouse Animation Drawing with Handwritten Personal Correspondence on Mickey Mouse Stationary (Walt Disney, 1936/38). Offered in this lot is a charming original trimmed animation drawing of Mickey Mouse from his 1938 short The Whalers accompanied by handwritten correspondence presented on Walt Disney Productions stationery dated Feb-8-'36. The 101st short for Disney, The Whalers features the classic trio of Mickey, Donald, and Goofy doing exactly as the title suggests, sailing the seas on a whaling boat in search the large yet elusive prey; this frame can be spotted at approximately the 1:47 mark of the short when viewed online. The drawing has been rendered in graphite on animation paper trimmed to approximately 3.5" x 4.75" with Mickey's full-figured image measuring 3.25" x 4". It has been adhered to the accompanying letter with artist's tape. The brief letter has been hand-written on stationary featuring a letterhead emblazoned with Mickey Mouse which was often used by the Studio for official communique throughout the late 1930s. The mysterious personal correspondence bears only the singular names of addressee Bud and scribe Grayce, simply asking if Bud is "still coming Saturday". Though the origins of the letter and the people referenced within are bathed in obscurity it is nonetheless a unique and interesting entry in the early history of the beloved Studio. With typical handling and wear including the noted trimmed and adherence of the drawing, remaining tape residue/staining to both pieces, horizontal fold lines in the letter, and edge wear including minor corner creasing and tears, overall this unique pair is in Good condition.
