compass, late 18th c. Brass gimbaled compass with paper dial, signed Walter Folger Jr. Nantucket. Compass diameter is 6 7/8", approx. 4 1/4" high. House in its original painted dovetailed box with cover. Box is 6 3/4" x 10" x 10". Folger (1765-1849) was a self taught mathematician, scientist, astronomer, lawyer, inventor, clockmaker, and Congressman. He served in Congress 1817-1821.
