Following his artistic inclinations, Heimig attended the Art Academy in Dusseldorf, having as teachers Peter Janssen the Elder, Claus Meyer and Eduard von Gebhardt. In 1905 he won the Rome Scholarship of the Academy of Prussian Arts in Italy. Among his friends were painters Walter Ophey and Toni Wolter. Since 1907 he has been regularly present in major German art exhibitions, such as the Great Art Exhibition in Berlin and the Glass Palace in Munich. He lived in Paris for three years, where he became familiar with the styles and subjects of Impressionism and Fauvism, earning a reputation as a painter of "gallant scenes" as well as of parks and dances, which he created figuratively and with strong colour accents. The distinctive features of these images are often women with long and wide skirts.
