Born in Germany, Walter Piepke immigrated to the United States with his family at the age of 15. He received his MFA from Rochester Institute of Technology and an MA from from the University of New Hampshire. He taught foreign language and art in New York, Virginia and North Carolina.
His artist statement is as follows:
"My work is mainly figurative and I use bold colors, facial expressions, and the posture of the figures to reveal their relationships and to express nuances of emotion. The influences on my work are the Expressionists and the Baroque artists of northern Europe."
