This belongs to the series of tinted or coloured drawings which Sickert made of his favourite Dieppe landscape subjects for sale in London. He often traced several drawings from a prime version. The title (meaning the salty well) refers to the well situated in the Rue de la Barre in front of the Café des Tribunaux which terminates the view in the background. The present structure is purely decorative and replaces the 16th century original.
