Walther Funk Autograph Note Signed to His Nuremberg Defense Counsel, Fritz Sauter

[ translate ]

Funk prepares "the plan for my interrogation" at Nuremberg

ANS in German, signed “Funk,” one page, 6.5 x 8, April 15, [1946]. Handwritten note to his Nuremberg defense counsel, Dr. Fritz Sauter, in full (translated): "In the plan for my interrogation we must have the marked passages from the questionnaire on the public peace picked up and copied." In fine condition.

Written as Walther Funk and his attorney Fritz Sauter were preparing his defense before the International Military Tribunal, this note reflects the detailed work of assembling documents and testimony for Funk’s own examination. Funk’s case was presented in early May 1946, when Sauter questioned him extensively about his roles in the Nazi government, wartime economic policy, and the Reichsbank; this April 15 note shows Funk personally directing attention to passages he wanted incorporated into that defense. The effort ultimately failed to secure his acquittal: on October 1, 1946, Funk was convicted on counts of crimes against peace, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, and sentenced to life imprisonment.
