1807 partial Document Signed, by Pennsylvania Governor Thomas McKean (signer of the Declaration of Independence), commissioning Archibald Jordan Inspector of Militia. Separated at folds and inexpert partial repair with tape. Approximately 12 x 14"

General order for the muster of the state Militia.

"The landing upon our shores by the enemy hordes of marauders, for the purpose avowedly to create by plunder, burning and general devastation, all possible individual and public distress, gives scope for action to the militia of Pennsylvania by repelling that foe, and with just indignation seek to avenge the unprovoked wrongs heaped on our unoffending country."

5000 Millitia men of eight counties, called up for 6 months service, were to "repair with alacrity which duty commands" to the general rendezvous at Yorktown, and from there, to "march towards Baltimore", there to report to General William Winder (whose disastrous defeat by the British at the Battle of Bladensburg had led to the destruction of Washington). "Pennsylvanians whose hearts must be gladdened at the recital of the deeds of heroism achieved by their fellow-citizen soldiers now in arms on the lake frontier, and within enemies country... will with ardor seek and punish that same implacable foe, now marauding on the Atlantic shores of two of our sisters states...confident that obedience will b e given to the pressing call of our country"
