Ward Lockwood was an American painter and printmaker who became a key modernist voice in the Taos, New Mexico art colony. Born in Atchison, Kansas, he trained at the University of Kansas, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and in Paris, and later studied with Andrew Dasburg before settling in New Mexico in 1926, where his work ranged widely across modernist modes, from cubist and expressionist tendencies to more experimental, abstract directions. During the 1930s he also completed major public-art mural commissions for federal buildings, and later became an influential educator, including helping found the art department at the University of Texas at Austin, while maintaining deep ties to the Southwest throughout his career.
