LOT 0021

Wedding Announcement, Divorce papers, Inviting Mom

[ translate ]

This lot includes the wedding announcement of John Steinbeck and Elaine Scott from Elaine's Mother, most likely published in Texas. This lot also includes Elaine Scott's official divorce papers from Zachary Scott dated December 20th 1950 allowing her the freedom to marry John Steinbeck and the Property Settlement agreement between Zachary Scott and Elaine Scott. A newspaper clip from when Zachary Scott was arrested for being drunk in pubic in the summer of 1961 in Hawaii. This also includes a letter Elaine wrote to her mom's boss, Ed Beal, to give Libby permission to attend her daughters wedding to John Steinbeck in NYC and a letter from him to give to Libby if we accepted which is also inscribed and initialed by John Steinbeck. The wedding announcement reads: Attention Parsons, Kilgallen, Winchell, et al: The marriage date for ELAINE SCOTT, formerly of Fort Worth and JOHN STEINBECK, author of "Grapes of Wrath" and a short lived Broadway plat, "Burning Bright," is Dec. 28 - NOT November as everyone keeps reporting. At least this is the word from Elaine's mother, Mrs Libbie Anderson of 2241 College. Mrs Anderson says the marriage won't be in November as Elaine won't get her divorce from ZACHARY SCOTT until next month. The honeymoon destination will be kept secret. However, Elaine has written that "It will be some place where neither of us have been before." Louella Parsons said they would go to Europe. But they've both been there before. Provenance: The Estate of John and Elaine Steinbeck
