Weegee (American, 1899-1968) Father Divine Goes To Court As 5,000 Shout (6 works), April 23, 1937 Gelatin silver Each 9-3/4 x 7-3/4 inches (24.8 x 19.7 cm) Each with A. Fellig credit stamps on verso. Two captioned in ink on verso. Faithful Angels Chant and Keep Nightlong Vigil as Police Headquarters Becomes Divine Abode. "Peace, He's God," Echoes Through Streets Around the Criminal Courts Building. Father Divine was an African-American spiritual leader who claimed to be God. On April 20, 1937, Harry Green was stabbed trying to deliver Father Divine a summons when a Peace Mission Movement meeting turned violent. Joseph Denove, a reporter for the Evening Journal was ruffed up when he tried to call the police. Divine fled to Connecticut but returned on the 23rd to face charges.
