Weegee (1899-1968), Joseph Gedeon, Wrongly Accused of Killing Ex-Wife, Daughter and Deaf Boarder (1937)
Weegee (American, 1899-1968) Joseph Gedeon, Wrongly Accused of Killing Ex-Wife, Daughter and Deaf Boarder, May 6, 1937 Gelatin silver 8-3/4 x 6-5/8 inches (22.2 x 16.8 cm) Police found a pistol in Gedeon's upholstery shop and he was arrested for gun possession and released on $1,000 bail. Joseph Gedeon was the ex-husband of Mary Gedeon and father of their daughters, Ethel and Veronica. Mary Gedeon ran a rooming house at 316 East 50th Street. On March 28, Easter Sunday, 1937 relatives found the bodies of Mary, Veronica and, in a nearby room, Frank Byrnes, a deaf English waiter. Police focused their suspicions on Joseph Gedeon but soon shifted their attention to Robert George Irwin, a mentally disturbed artist and sculptor. Irwin had lived in the Gedeon rooming house two year earlier after release from a state mental hospital and had become infatuated with Ethel Gedeon. After a nationwide manhunt Irwin surrendered and confessed that intended to kill Ethel but when she was not there he "accidentally" killed the others instead. Veronica was a 20-year old model whose portfolio of sexy photographs found in the apartment added to all the press the story received.
