Weegee (American, 1899-1968) Spurned Suitor Clubs Violinist to Death, New York, April 19, 1937 Gelatin silver 9-1/4 x 7-5/8 inches (23.5 x 19.4 cm) A detective examines the blood stains in the West Forty-third Street rehearsal room in which the violinist was fatally beaten. Julia Nussenbaum was a violinist who studied at the Julliard School in New York but performed in night clubs under the name of Tania Lubova. Mischa Rosenbaum, her manager, be came infatuated with her and had arranged a meeting at a rehearsal studio. Rosenbaum arrived drunk and with a hammer that he had found. He claimed that Nussenbaum hit him on the arm and shoulder with a stick before he struck her with the hammer 8-12 times and dragged her body behind a curtain.
