Weekly performance ledger of the Empire Theatre.

[New York], 23 August 1897 to 6 May 1899
153 manuscript pages. Folio, 13¼ x 8 inches, original ½ calf over marbled boards, worn, boards nearly detached; coming disbound, moderate dampstaining.

This theatrical ledger breaks down each week's performance, showing daily ticket receipts versus each expense, giving a clear idea of the theater's profits for each show. The weather is noted briefly for each show to show the impact of rain or snow. Performances by some of the biggest stars of the American stage were recorded in this ledger. The shows listed here were "Never Again"; Maude Adams in "The Little Minister"; John Drew in "A Marriage of Convenience" and "The Liars"; "The Conquerors" (which ran for 16 weeks); William H. Crane in "His Honor the Mayor"; William Gillette in "Too Much Johnson" and "Secret Service"; and the Empire Stock Company performing "Phroso" and "Lord and Lady Algy."

The Empire Theatre opened in 1893 on 40th Street in Manhattan, and remained in operation through 1953. It is not named in this ledger, but most or all of the performances recorded here were advertised at the Empire in the New York newspapers, and some of the shows were performed by the Empire Stock Company.
