Welte Brisgovia Orchestrion w/ 10 Music Rolls
The Welte Brisgovia is a rare, historically significant piano-based orchestrion built by the renowned German mechanical musical instrument manufacturer M. Welte & Söhne of Freiburg im Breisgau (from which the "Brisgovia" name is derived). Introducedin the early 20th century, this high-end commercial instrument combinesan automated acoustic piano mechanism with a suite of percussion and orchestral instrumentation to mimic a live musical ensemble.
At its core, the Brisgovia utilizes a specialized, keyboardless piano. To achieve a full orchestral effect, Welte added secondary instrumentation inside the cabinet, which includes a bass drum, snare drum, triangle, cymbals, xylophone, and a mandolin attachment. Unlike standard, flat-toned playerpianos of the era, the Brisgovia line utilized advanced pneumatic technology derived from Welte's famous Welte-Mignon reproducing piano rolls. The vacuum-operated expression devices regulated the force of the piano strikes and balanced the accompanying instrumentation to perfectly match the finest shades of volume and tempo, successfully mimicking a real pianist's touch. The Brisgovia operates using proprietary 100-Hole Welte "P.O." (Piano Orchestrion) paper rolls measuring 12 7/8 inches wide.
