Werner Scholz* (Berlin 1898 - 1982 Alpbach)
Montain hamlet, 1966
oil/plate 70 x 60 cm
monogrammed W.S.

Weiterführende Künstler und Begriffe: George Grosz, Otto Dix, Max Beckmann, Emil Nolde, Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Curt Valentin, Ferdinand Ostertag; Expressionismus, Die Brücke, Entartete Kunst, Berliner Großstadtmalerei, Novembergruppe, Alpbach Künstlerkolonie, Stahl-Triptychon, Triptychen, Pastell-Zyklen

The German painter Werner Scholz began his studies at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts in 1916, which he interrupted by volunteering for service in the First World War, losing his left forearm in 1917. After the war, he resumed his studies in 1919–1920, moved into a studio at Nollendorfplatz in 1920, and devoted himself to expressionist black-and-white works as well as socially critical oil paintings of Berlin's urban milieu, inspired by the Brücke group and Emil Nolde. In 1930, the National Gallery in Berlin and the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne acquired his work; in 1937, he was denounced as "degenerate" and banned from exhibiting. In 1939, he moved to Alpbach, Tyrol; after 1945, he created pastel cycles on themes of the Apocalypse, the Old Testament, and mythology, and later industrial and landscape paintings. Scholz is considered a representative of the second generation of Expressionism, characterized by bold gestures, dark palettes, and a focus on urban misery, as well as later on religious and mythical themes. His works are held in collections including the National Gallery in Berlin, the Buchheim Museum, and private collections. Related artists and styles: George Grosz, Otto Dix, Max Beckmann, Emil Nolde, Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Curt Valentin, Ferdinand Ostertag; Expressionism, Die Brücke (The Bridge), Degenerate Art, Berlin urban painting, November Group, Alpbach Artists' Colony, steel triptych, triptychs, pastel cycles
