Wilfred Avery, British 1926-2016 - Mutation I, 1967; collage, gouache and ink on paper, signed and dated lower right 'Avery 1967', 25.4 x 35.7 cm Provenance: the Estate of the Artist, cat. no. '67/D/4/1' (according to the inscription on the reverse of the frame) Note: in his early work of the 1950s, Avery would explore the rhythms and energy of the British landscape, combining a cubist visual approach with a deeply spiritual sense of the land itself. During the 1960s, Avery and his twin brother, Sam Lock, met artist Adrien de Menasce, who would become Locke's life partner. Avery and de Menasce's mature work would explore a similar visual language, looking at eroticism more deeply in their work, juxtaposing the landscape with the male body in both collage and painting. Both artists created a unique and highly individual contribution to Post-War British art and queer visual culture, and one that should be recognised alongside that of Keith Vaughan, Francis Bacon and David Hockney. Works by Wilfred Avery are currently on display as part of 'Cruising the Collection¥ at Towner Eastbourne and a retrospective at the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon is planned for 2023. His works are in public collection including the Jerwood Collection, Southampton City Art Gallery, Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery, Exeter and the Ingram Collection. He exhibited during his lifetime with Gallery One and Beaux Arts Gallery in London.
