With the stamp of Kunsthandlung J. P. Schneider jr., Frankfurt a. Main to the reverse, as well as the hand-written inscription "Heuernte in Russland / gemalt von W. A. Beer", and a hand-written label reading "W. A. Beer, Frankfurt M. Grüneburgweg 153. / Ölgemälde / Heuernte [?] Gou. Smolensk" to the back of the frame.
W. A. Beer learnt to paint at the Städelsches Kunstinstitut, where he became a professor in 1897. His penchant for depicting Russian folk-themes earned him the nickname "Russian Beer".
