Note:
Rudolf and his brother Henri Lehmann (1814-1882) studied at the École des Beaux-arts in Paris. Rudolf moved to London in 1866, where, in part through his wife Amelia Chambers (1838-1903), he was connected to Charles Dickens (1812-1870), Frederic Leighton (1830-1896), and George Eliot (1819-1880). Lehmann worked primarily as a portraitist, with his skill in capturing the character and presence of his sitters evident in the present work.
