Wilhelm Hunt Diederich (American, 1884-1953)

Adam and Eve, A Pair
Adam signed and dated "Hunt/Diederich/1920" in the bronze base.
Bronze with brown patina, heights approximately 6 3/8 in. (16.2 cm), each on an integral base.
Condition: Both figures with small areas of wear to the patina at the high points on the backs of the figures, more noticeable on Adam, verdigris and dust and dirt to the interstices.

Provenance: Private Collection, New York (by descent), acquired from the above by the current owner.

N.B. Born in Austria, W. Hunt Diederich was a descendant of the family of the painter William Morris Hunt and the architect Richard Morris Hunt. After initial studies in Switzerland, he attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, where he met Paul Manship, who became a loyal friend. Well respected for his work, Diederich received many public and private commissions, and he continued to exhibit successfully through the 1940s and into the 1950s, both in Europe and in America. He was widely known for his figurative sculpture and collages on paper in the Art Deco style, often featuring horses, a motif he added to decorative artwork, including firescreens.
