Will Martyr, British b.1980- Something Worth Saving, 2017; oil on canvas, signed, titled and dated 2017 on the reverse, 179x179cm (unframed)(ARR) Provenance: Unit London; Private Collection, London Exhibition; 'Wanderlust', Unit London, 2017 Literature: Fad Magazine, 23 July 2017 (illustrated); Wide Walls Online, 23 June 2017 (illustrated) Note: Will Martyr is a contemporary British artist who studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, New York Studio School, and the Royal College of Art in London. The present piece is an impressive example of Martyr’s work, which is striking in its combination of its large scale and use of bold blocks of colour. Martyr contrasts this with incredibly precise brushstrokes and a close attention to detail, creating a smoothness to the painting which almost effaces the artist’s own hand, and recalls the computer-generated images which have increasingly become part of our visual landscape. In this way, the present piece expresses Martyr’s debt to movements such as Pop Art. Works by Martyr are held in collections across the world, including in Beijing, Lagos, Athens, Stockholm, and Sydney.
