This view almost certainly represents the Jordaan district of Amsterdam, with the Westerkerk in the background. The artist, who was only 21 years old when it was painted, was living in the city at that time. Born into a family of artists, as a young man Willem Koekkoek studied architecture, an interest may have led to his specializing in paintings of town- and cityscapes such as this.
