Wilhelmus Henricus Petrus Johannes (Willem) de Zwart (The Hague 16 May 1862 – 11 December 1931) was a Dutch painter, draughtsman, etcher, watercolourist and painter. De Zwart studied from 1876 to 1880 at the Royal Academy of Art in the Hague. He lived and worked in The Hague until 1894. In 1883 he temporarily stayed in Paris. He lived in Soest until 1896, in Hilversum until 1898, in Laren until 1900, in Amsterdam from 1900 to 1905 and in Veur until 1917. In 1917 he returned to The Hague, where he died in 1931. He also worked a lot in Scheveningen, Voorburg and Bloemendaal. The work of Willem de Zwart shows a wide range of subjects: landscapes, cityscapes, portraits and still lifes, displayed in a naturalistic-impressionist style. Willem de Zwart belongs to The Hague School with the topics he used and to the Amsterdam Impressionists with his use of style and colour. He is also referred to as the ‘The Hague Breitner’. His landscapes, figure paintings and still lives were painted with a smooth, bold brush strokes. The paint was thickly applied, sometimes directly from the tube, with bright colours in abundant reds, yellows and blues giving his paintings an extraordinary vibrancy. The artwork comes from a private collection. The work is signed at the bottom right.
