HERP THE ELDER, WILLEM VAN
Antwerpen 1614 - 1677
Title: Saint Anthony of Padua Proofing Martin von Bullones' Innocence Who Is Charged with Murder.
Date: ca. 1660.

Collection stamp: "R".
Provenance:
Private ownership, Germany.
Hans Vlieghe associates this painting on copper and with a subject relating to the life of St Anthony of Padua with a painting by Willem van Herp in the National Gallery in London (St Anthony of Padua distributing the bread, oil on copper, 80 x 114.3 cm, inventory number NG203), which is also painted on copper and has similar dimensions and subject matter. Hans Vlieghe surmises that the two works originally belonged to a cycle created around 1660.
We are grateful to Hans Vlieghe, Antwerp, for confirming the attribution of the present painting on the basis of a high-resolution digital photograph
