Willem van de Velde the Elder, Dutch 1611-1693- A group of fishermen conversing; black chalk, pen and black ink, and grey wash on laid paper, 13.8 x 16.4 cm. Provenance: With P. & D. Colnaghi & Co., London.; Private Collection, UK, since 1966.; By descent. Note: This belongs to a considerable group of figure studies which had been variously attributed (to Jan Porcellis and others) but were convincingly shown by Sir Bruce Ingram to be by the elder van de Velde (see his note in the catalogue of 'Masters of Maritime Art, a second Loan Exhibition', Colnaghi, London, March 1937).
