William Callow, RWS, British 1812-1908- The edge of a town...
William Callow, RWS,
British 1812-1908-
The edge of a town on an alpine lake, with boats and figures;
pencil and watercolour heightened with scratching out on paper, signed 'Wm Callow' (lower left), 16.6 x 25 cm.
Provenance:
Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 8 November 1994, lot 98.
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Callow was a prolific watercolourist whose quiet and contemplative landscapes earned him particular popularity amongst audiences in 19th-century Britain. His association with many of the most prominent contemporary watercolourists undoubtedly shaped his output, from his apprenticeship to Anthony Vandyke Copley Fielding (1787-1855) to his friendships with Charles Bentley (1805/6-1854) and Thomas Shotter Boys (1803-1874).
