William De Morgan (1839-1917), Tile depicting a winged creature amid 'Persian' foliage, 1888-1897, Glazed earthenware, Impressed stamp verso for Sands End Pottery (indistinct), 15.4cm x 14.1cm. Literature: Martin Greenwood, The Designs of William de Morgan, London, 2007, page 156, plate 509 for tile panel design, and page 237, plate 244 for similar creature illustrated.
The glaze has come away from the tile in a section measuring 13mm x 16mm under the beast's body, and another 4mm square on the upper body, other losses and heavily crazed throughout. Patch of white paint to upper right corner. Verso edges impacted from when tile was removed from the wall. Additional images available.
