William Harper Two-Color Gold, Silver, Baroque Freshwater Pearl and Cloisonné Enamel 'Firebird' Brooch
The large pear-shaped brooch of yellow and rose gold set with one baroque pearl and cloisonné orange, yellow, green and blue translucent and opaque enamel of varied geometric patterns, edged by textured gold cock's comb and spiral terminal, engraved silver back with spiral gold closure, hand engraved and signed H. William Harper, 1994, "The Firebird," ap. 122 grams gross.

Provenance: Sollo Rago Modern Auction, 2-3 April 2005, lot 205

William Harper was born in Bucyrus, Ohio in 1944. Having graduated with a Masters in Education from Case Western Reserve University in 1967, he began his career as an abstract painter but soon afterwards switched to enameling after studying at the Cleveland Institute of Art. His distinctive style and highly intricate painterly cloisonne enamel work have been celebrated in exhibitions worldwide. His work is in currently in the Smithsonian and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
