Published in London "typis Du-Gardianis; impensis Octaviani Pulleyn in Coemeterio Paulino" [=William Dugard for Ocatvian Pulleyn te Elder] in 1651. 4to format (22 x 16. 5 cm) . Bound in a very beautiful leather binding from around 1800. The spine is richly gold stamped. Gold-stamped decorations on the boards. Pagination: (16) , 301, (1) pp. With beautifully etched frontispiece.

Very good condition. Band beautiful. Interior good. The title page is cut slightly short at the top. A small repaired tear in the margin of page 181. Otherwise very fine.

The extremely rare first edition of this important work by Harvey on conception, embryology and birth. The chapter "De Partu" is even the first English work on obstetrics.

William Harvey (Folkestone, April 1, 1578 - Hampstead, June 3, 1657) was a British physician and naturalist. He was also Warden of Merton College, University of Oxford. Harvey is known as the man who brought about the greatest change, whether desired or not, in the image that existed about the circulatory system. He is also the one who actually discovered that circulation does exist.
